Igor Calvo finds in the
modern urban environment, in the streets, the key and basis of his photographic
work. Fascinated by photography from an early age, complements a self-taught
photographic education with several workshops at the Tate Modern and Bilbao
Fine Arts Museum. It is not until 2009 that he gives the final jump to
exhibitions, first at his hometown in Bilbao
and, from 2010 to 2014 at PhotoArte
Komite on-line Art Gallery; being photographer-in-residence at the
Gallery during that same period. Besides, and since their creation back in
2010, Igor is a member of “Colectivo
Komite”: a group of photographers and artists who creates, works and intervenes
mainly in the public space. Collective that has recently taken over from PhaKe to
transform PhotoArte Komite into an art platform for the encouragement,
promotion, dissemination and visibilization of all the content and work
generated by Colectivo Komite.
As an
author, the photographic work of Igor Calvo shows his position on
post-capitalism in Western societies. Thus, with an aesthetic style, very
personal frames and meticulous technique, Igor concatenates beautiful images
under which there is both a very critical view and an attitude of complaint to
the process of transformation of individuals into a mere object of production/consumption.
Each of his images offers the viewer a personal analysis of our society, aiming
at each individual to think over the reality in which they live and be aware of
his/her power as citizen to act and change it.

Igor
Calvo encuentra en el entorno urbano moderno, en las calles, la clave y la base
de su trabajo fotográfico. Fascinado por la fotografía desde una edad muy
temprana, complementa su formación autodidacta con los talleres que realiza en
el Museo de BB.AA de Bilbao o en la Tate Modern. Su salto a las exposiciones lo
realiza en el año 2009 en Bilbao, su ciudad natal y, durante el periodo
2010-2014, en la Galería de Arte On-Line PhotoArte Komite; siendo fotógrafo
residente de la galería durante el mismo periodo. Además, y desde su creación
allá por 2010, Igor es miembro de “Colectivo Komite”: un
grupo de fotógraf+s y artistas que crean e intervienen mayoritariamente en el
espacio público. Colectivo que ha tomado el relevo de PhaKe para convertir PhotoArte
Komite en una plataforma para el estimulo, la promoción, difusión y
visibilización del trabajo de Colectivo
Komite.
El trabajo de Igor Calvo muestra claramente su
posicionamiento ante el post-capitalismo en las sociedades occidentales. Haciendo
uso de encuadres muy personales y una cuidada técnica, Igor Calvo encadena
bellas imágenes bajo las que subyace una mirada muy crítica ante el proceso de
transformación del individuo/ciudadano en mero objeto de producción/consumo.
Cada una de sus imágenes nos ofrece un personal análisis de nuestra sociedad,
intentando que cada individuo sea consciente de la realidad en la que vive y se
de cuenta de su poder como ciudadano para actuar y modificarla.
